Five-Week-Old Interstate Kitten Survives Foot Pur-suit and Gets Adopted by Rescuing Deputy
A five-week-old kitten took refuge by a highway barrier on Interstate 275 before leading Florida law enforcement on an adorable roadside chase.
What happened
According to UPI, a five-week-old kitten found itself stranded alongside a bustling Florida highway before law enforcement intervened to bring the animal to safety. The rescue took place along the southbound lanes of Interstate 275 in Hillsborough County.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reported on social media that a patrolling deputy spotted the tiny feline huddled tightly against a concrete barrier wall at the edge of the active interstate. The deputy pulled over to assist and was joined at the scene by a Florida Highway Patrol trooper.
When the officers approached, the kitten attempted to flee, initiating what the sheriff’s office described as a quick foot pur-suit along the shoulder. Working together, the deputy and the state trooper successfully wrangled the evasive feline without incident. The encounter led to an adoption, as the rescuing deputy’s own family took the animal into their home. The sheriff’s office announced that the kitten has been named Dash and is thriving in his new environment with a full belly and a happy tail.

Listen, you guys, whenever a headline starts with the words “Florida” and “Highway,” your brain immediately braces for maximum chaos. Usually there is a golf cart on fire, or an escaped reptile, or somebody trying to transport a fiberglass pirate ship strapped to the roof of a Honda Civic. But not today! Today the Sunshine State delivered pure, unfiltered goodness, and I am putting a gold star directly on my corkboard.
Here is the setup. A five-week-old kitten somehow ends up on southbound Interstate 275 in Hillsborough County, huddled right against the concrete barrier. An interstate shoulder is loud, terrifying, and basically the worst possible place for a creature that weighs less than a can of soup. But then a Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputy spots him. And instead of calling it in as road debris, the deputy pulls over. Then a Florida Highway Patrol trooper pulls over too. You have two different law enforcement agencies forming an impromptu inter-agency task force for a furball!
Now, you would think a kitten would see two uniformed officers and say, great, rescue has arrived. Absolutely not. The kitten chooses evasion. The sheriff’s office officially reported that the deputy engaged in a “quick foot pur-suit.” Think about that for a second! An official government social media dispatch used the phrase FOOT PUR-SUIT with a straight face. On my Tactical Puns in Law Enforcement Index, that gets a solid twelve out of ten. Two adult officers in full duty gear sprinting along the highway shoulder trying to outmaneuver a tiny animal with four-wheel drive. That is Olympic-level agility right there!
I spent twenty minutes staring at my map wondering how this connects to the squirrel in Ohio and the coyote in Pennsylvania. Because think about it: all three of them were creatures testing human infrastructure around the exact same time! Is there an underground animal council coordinating an audit of American civil engineering? Are the squirrels checking stadium seating while the kittens evaluate interstate shoulders? It makes TOO much sense.
ANYWAY. Back to reality.
The best part of this entire dispatch is what happened after the wrangling. The deputy did not just take the kitten to a shelter and drive away. The deputy’s family has since adopted him. They named him Dash, which is an elite-tier name for an animal that made Florida law enforcement run wind sprints in the humidity. The department confirmed that Dash’s belly is full, his tail is happy, and he is officially living his best life.
Sometimes the world feels completely upside down, and then you read about two cops pulling over on a screaming interstate just to scoop up a runaway kitten and give him a couch. We are going to be okay, you guys. We really are.
Stay weird out there. I mean it.
